How to measure for skirting
Measure each wall run separately, then plan how those runs will fit into the board lengths available.
1. Make a simple room plan
Sketch the room from above and label every wall, recess and chimney breast. Record measurements in millimetres. Measure at skirting level and check irregular walls in more than one place.
2. Measure the runs you will cover
Include short returns and alcoves. Subtract door openings where no skirting will be fitted. Note internal and external corners, because they affect your cuts and the usable length of each piece.
3. Plan your cuts
Add the wall runs to estimate the total linear length, then allocate individual pieces to the lengths offered on the product page. A total length alone can underestimate the boards needed when long runs must be kept in one piece. Allow for saw cuts, mitres, trimming and any unavoidable offcuts.
4. Include a sensible allowance
Many straightforward rooms benefit from around 10% extra material, but your cutting plan should decide the final allowance. Rooms with numerous corners, difficult angles or long uninterrupted runs may need more. Check access through doors and stairwells for the board length you choose.
5. Check the other dimensions
Height is measured from the floor to the top of the board. Depth is how far it projects from the wall. A rebate, where offered, is a recess at the back; check its compatibility with the selected board size before adding it.
